Gunning Fog Index Calculator
Measure text readability - simpler is better!
INFO:
The Gunning Fog Index is a readability formula that estimates the years of education a reader would need to understand a piece of writing at first glance.
Paste any text into the box, hit Calculate, and the tool counts your words and sentences, then identifies complex words — those with three or more syllables. A short news article might score around 8, which is comfortable for most readers; academic writing often reaches 15 or above. As a rule of thumb, aim for 7–8 for general audiences, and keep public-facing content below 12.
The tool also lists every distinct complex word in alphabetical order, making it easy to spot jargon or long-winded phrasing you might want to simplify.
